How to make Homemade Dehydrated Kidney Treats? Pet Treat Recipe.

Hey, fellow pet lovers!

Today’s post is going to be a quick and easy dehydrated kidney recipe that your dog is going to love! This recipe is straightforward to make and will take you seconds to prepare. Lily is super picky and hates eating kidney raw, so the only way I can get her to eat it is by dehydrating it. Nia actually doesn’t mind eating it raw, but I have tried a million times to get Lily to give it a go, and she just won’t. To be fair, I don’t blame her; it looks and smells disgusting!

Let’s jump straight in and learn how to make your furry friend their very own homemade kidney treats!

What you will need?

  • A chopping board
  • A sharp knife
  • Gloves if you mind getting your hands dirty
  • Scales (non-essential)
  • A dehydrator
  • An airtight container for finished treats
  • Raw kidney, I just used two packets which, is about 1 kilo, but you can do as much as you like as long as you have enough space in your dehydrator.

Step One, Sort Dehydrator & Trays

The first step is to sort out your dehydrator and trays so that once you have cut up your kidney into flat strips or however you want them, you can easily stick everything on the dehydrator trays without having to wash your hands in between.

Step Two, Prepare The Kidney

Raw Kidney,

There’s just no way to make raw kidney look nice!!! 🤢

Step two is to prepare your raw kidney; I messed up when making this batch as I usually cut my kidney up when it is still slightly frozen as it is a lot easier to cut up into even strips. However, I bought this kidney fresh and prepared it that same day which meant I had to cut it up defrosted. I definitely would suggest sticking the kidney in the freezer for an hour or so beforehand just to make cutting it up that little bit easier. Once you have your kidney, cut it all up into even strips.

Step Three, Transport Kidney To The  Dehydrator Trays

Kidney on trays

Place the sliced kidney on tbe dehydrator trays.

The next step is to stick your kidney on your dehydrator trays and then place them into your dehydrator to start the cooking process. Place all your sliced kidney into the dehydrator on its highest setting. We have an Excalibur nine-tray dehydrator, and it has a set timer on so we can choose to leave it on for 24 hours or longer. However, if you don’t have a timer then just keep checking on it, but it will take at least 16 hours if not 24 depending on how thick your slices are. Halfway through I take the kidney off the non-stick Excalibur paper and put it on the plastic mesh underneath to ensure all moisture leaves the treats.

Step Four, Put Treats In Airtight Jar

Finished treats

This batch looks a bit odd but the girls don’t seem to mind!

Take your finished treats out of the dehydrator and store them in an airtight container, in the freezer or the fridge depending on how long they will be around and how fatty they are. As you can see above in step threes picture, some treats have some fatty lumps on and if left out this fat could go rancid, so sticking your treats in the freezer is the safest option for ensuring they don’t spoil. This batch turned out pretty bad, but the girls didn’t seem to care about their awful appearance, which is excellent. If I had remembered to placet the kidney in the freezer beforehand, I would have cut it into even strips like I do when I make the liver treats.
