Hey, fellow pet lovers!
As you know epoch.pet is a massive advocate of raw feeding for our furry friends.
So today’s post is going to talk all about the amazing health benefits that come with feeding a species appropriate diet, such as:
Prey Model Raw (PMR).
Or BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Feeding or Bones and Raw food) diets.
Let’s jump straight in and list some of the many reasons why feeding our pets a raw diet is naturally and nutritionally superior to feeding an overly processed commercial diet, such as low-quality kibble or canned/pouched wet food.
Benefits of Feeding a BARF or PMR diet
Raw feeding provides your pet with all their nutritional requirements.
Raw feeding is the best feeding method for ensuring you are providing your pet with everything they need to stay fit and healthy.
Since you are feeding your pet a diet that consists of fresh raw muscle meat, edible meaty bones, and raw organs and offal, you are consistently supplying them with a variety of fresh food sources, that are far better than feeding an overly processed commercial pet food, day in and day out.
Raw feeding gives your dog (Or cat) a diet that is suited to their genetic makeup.
Raw feeding really focuses on feeding your pet a diet that works alongside their biology.
Unlike overly processed commercial pet foods, raw diets take into consideration what our pets are built to eat, which is a higher protein and fat diet with a low functional carbohydrate intake.
A lot of people are shocked when you tell them that their dog is 98.8% similar in its genetic makeup to a Grey wolf.
And what do wolves eat?
A species appropriate diet, therefore our domesticated friends should too!
Your pet will have more energy on a Raw diet.
One thing I have noticed from feeding our girls a raw diet is how much more energy they have in comparison to my non-raw fed pets, in the past.
Feeding a raw diet will give your pet a super shiny and healthy looking coat.
What you will notice from feeding your pet a raw diet is how quickly their coat changes from dull and dry, to super soft and shiny. You can tell a raw fed pet, from a pet that is fed a diet of low-quality kibble or canned/pouched wet food just by looking at them.
Eliminating health conditions and food Intolerances/Sensitivities.
By feeding a raw diet a lot of people are able to eliminate various ailments that have affected their pets for years.
This is due to a variety of reasons but a lot of the issues such as yeast infections, flatulence, and leaky gut syndrome can be a result of eating a poor diet filled with non-functional carbohydrates, low-quality protein sources such as soy and corn and a myriad of harmful chemicals, preservatives and palatability enhancers.
Healthy teeth and gums.
By feeding your pet a raw diet you will be ensuring great dental health.
Raw bones are nature’s toothbrushes for our pets. When you give your pet a raw bone it helps scrape off any excess plaque build-up and keeps their gums and teeth clean and healthy.
Raw bones also offer great mental stimulation for our pets and can provide your furry friend with a fun exercise, which will strengthen their jaws muscles.
Always supervise your pet when feeding raw bones.
Strengthened immune system.
When you feed your pet a raw diet it helps ensure they have a strong and healthy immune system.
By providing your pet with a raw diet, this means you have not altered the nutritional value of the food in any way. Cooking destroys a lot of the essential nutrients in raw food, and by providing your pet with fresh raw food you are ensuring they are getting the most out of their diet.
Since you are not feeding your pet an overly processed commercial diet you will help their body to promote positive gene expression and eliminate unnecessary inflammation.
Knowing you are being the best pet parent possible!
I am not saying anyone who does not raw feed is not a good pet parent, there are plenty of non-raw feeders out there who are AMAZING pet owners. What I am saying though, is a lot of pet owners are brainwashed by the amazing ad campaigns of large pet food manufacturers and this has resulted in a large number of pets eating a diet that is not right for them in any way.
I remember thinking that mass-produced pet food was what dogs and cats should eat, after all, it is made with our pets nutritional needs in mind. However, when you actually look into the pet food and treat industries our pets needs are not top of the priority list and this needs to change!!
Our pets are innocent and they don’t have a say in what they eat, therefore it is so critical that we provide them with a diet that eliminates health issues and is nutritionally sound.
The best way to do this is to feed a varied diet of raw fresh functional foods to provide them with a healthy lifestyle and promote positive gene expression, which results in a happy and healthy pet.
Thanks for reading this post, these are just a handful of the many reasons why we should focus on feeding our pets a species appropriate diet to ensure they live a happy and healthy life.
